Our philosophy

1. The value of tutoring

Bloom's 2 sigma problem:

[Famous educational psychologist Benjamin] Bloom found that the average student tutored one-to-one using mastery learning techniques performed two standard deviations better than students educated in a classroom environment with one teacher to 30 students, with or without mastery learning. As quoted by Bloom: "the average tutored student was above 98% of the students in the control class".

2. Intuition

We are passionate about explaining complex concepts intuitively, especially when it comes to math and physics. Too often the school curriculum is more concerned with students' performance on tests than true understanding.

As an example: most introductory physics courses teach students to solve projectile motion problems by "plugging and chugging" a set of 5 equations. In fact, all projectile motion problems can be quickly solved without any memorized formulas, by relying on the basic definitions of velocity & acceleration and simple intuitive reasoning.

Even elementary math is often taught with an over-reliance on heuristics. We have seen it again and again in our practice. Tutoring is the surest way to develop intuition.

3. Repetition

Repetition is the mother of learning.

We assign homework and provide flashcards to our students as needed.

"Covid school" and the digitization of education has taken a toll on students' handwriting. On top of that, many schools no longer teach cursive. We can help!
